Lake Toxaway Estates is the largest community on Lake Toxaway, the 640-acre lake that is the largest privately held lake in North Carolina. With about 1,100 homesites, it wraps around much of the lake's 14 miles of shoreline and climbs into the surrounding mountains, offering everything from lakefront homes with private docks to golf course homes and wooded mountain retreats with long-range views. Some homes also look out over Lake Cardinal, a smaller lake within the community.
The community grew out of one of the most storied places in the Southern mountains. The original lake, built in 1902, drew guests like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison to the grand Toxaway Inn before a dam failure drained it in 1916. In 1960, the Lake Toxaway Company rebuilt the dam and restored the lake, and in 1963 it added a golf course, the beginning of today's Lake Toxaway Country Club and the community around it.
Lake Toxaway Estates is made up of a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own setting, from lakefront roads along the water to golf course homes and mountain ridges with views across the lake and the Blue Ridge. The community includes Bear Wallow Springs, Club Colony, Deep Ford Falls, Hawk Mountain, Lakeside Mountain, Meadow Ridge, Panther Ridge, Sutton's Cove, and Toxaway Mountain.
Along the water, Toxaway Drive and West Club Boulevard are home to some of the lake's grandest waterfront estates, many with private docks and boathouses just steps from the shoreline. Bear Wallow Springs borders Lake Toxaway Country Club and is gated, with paved roads and underground utilities. Its homes, from log cabins to craftsman-style houses, take in golf course, mountain, creek, and wooded views, and club membership is optional for owners in this neighborhood.
Higher on the mountain, Hawk Mountain is known for private estates set on generous acreage, many with sweeping views over Lake Toxaway and the surrounding ridges. Panther Ridge sits near Lake Cardinal, with homes looking out toward Toxaway Mountain, Mills Creek, and the smaller lake below. Meadow Ridge is home to one of the community's summer traditions, with live music from June through October.
Just outside Lake Toxaway Estates, buyers will also find smaller neighborhoods nearby, such as Indian Lake Estates, with wooded lots and lake views, and Toxaway Views, a condominium community with views toward Gorges State Park and Lake Jocassee in South Carolina.
Lake Toxaway Country Club's 18-hole course was fully redesigned by golf architect Kris Spence, who restored the back nine and then rebuilt the front nine as his first original design. The par-71 course plays to more than 6,600 yards, with lake views on the first and ninth holes and a waterfall behind the fifth green. The Tom Fazio Learning Center, a 20-acre practice facility, added a new Golf Academy in 2024 with covered hitting bays and Toptracer technology.
Lake Toxaway Country Club is the center of community life. Members enjoy a lakefront marina and boating, an award-winning outdoor pool, a racquet center with five Har-Tru tennis courts, three pickleball courts, and a pro shop, two championship croquet lawns, and a 5,300-square-foot fitness facility. Dining spans four venues, including the Firestone Grille patio, and the lodge-style clubhouse hosts events for up to 300 guests. In 2024, the club added The Nest, a 30-foot climbing wall and ropes tower for kids and adults.
Lake Toxaway Estates sits along US 64 between Cashiers and Brevard, each about 15 miles away. The Greystone Inn and Grand Olde Station are close by, Gorges State Park's 26 waterfalls and 56 miles of trails are just to the south, and Brevard offers the Brevard Music Center, downtown shopping, and Transylvania Regional Hospital.

Homes range from classic lake cottages to grand lakefront estates, with homesites that may include lake frontage, golf course frontage, Lake Cardinal views, wooded privacy, or long-range mountain views.
