Glenville sits at about 3,500 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Jackson County, along NC 107 about five miles north of Cashiers. It is a small, unincorporated mountain community of around 150 year-round residents, built around one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southern Appalachians: Lake Glenville, with 1,470 acres of water and 26 miles of shoreline at an elevation of 3,494 feet.
The lake has a fascinating history. In 1940, Nantahala Power and Light, then owned by the aluminum company ALCOA, began building a dam at Onion Falls on the West Fork of the Tuckasegee River to power wartime aluminum production. When the dam was finished in 1941, the rising water covered the old town of Hamburg, which had been settled by at least 1827, along with its homes, schools, and farmland. The community's church and graveyard were moved to the new shoreline, and the lake was officially known as Thorpe Reservoir from 1951 until 2002, a name still found on some maps today.
Today, Lake Glenville is a favorite for boating, swimming, fishing, and paddling, with deep, clear water that drops to more than 130 feet in places, and a public beach near the dam. Glenville offers a mix of lakefront homes, private golf and lake communities, mountain retreats, and quiet farmland, all within an easy drive of Cashiers, Highlands, and Sylva.

Life in Glenville follows the seasons and the lake. Summer is the busiest time of year, when seasonal homeowners return, boats fill the coves, and the lake becomes the center of every day, from morning paddles to evening swims off the dock. Fall brings crisp air and color reflecting off the water, and winter is quiet and peaceful, with long views across the lake through the bare trees and a slower, more local pace.
Glenville is a small, close-knit community, and much of its social life happens on and around the water. The Pines Recreation Area, built by Duke Energy and opened in 2015, gives the whole community a place on the lake, with a sandy swim beach, a fishing pier, picnic tables, and a free life jacket loaner board, all fully accessible. Many residents also belong to the area's lake and golf clubs, and Cashiers, just five miles south, adds restaurants, shops, and events at The Village Green.
Everyday essentials are an easy drive. Groceries, shops, and services are close by in Cashiers, the Glenville Community Thrift Store is right in the community, and medical care is available at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital to the south and Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, about 20 minutes north.
Dining in Glenville is casual and local, with a couple of community favorites right along NC 107. Happ's Place serves mountain-style food with live music and events, and The Local is a year-round roadside stop known for burgers, Cuban sandwiches, and live music. Shopping in Glenville centers on the lake. Signal Ridge Marina rents pontoons, tritoons, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards and offers boat sales, service, and storage, and the Glenville Thrift Shop is a local favorite for treasure hunting. For groceries, boutiques, galleries, and antiques, the shops of Cashiers are only minutes away.
For visiting family and friends, most stays in Glenville are private lake and mountain rentals, and Bluegreen Club Lodges at Trillium offers vacation villas within the Trillium community on the lake. The inns and hotels of Cashiers, including High Hampton and Hotel Cashiers, are just a short drive south.

Just below the Lake Glenville dam, High Falls drops about 100 feet down the West Fork of the Tuckasegee River. Most of the year it runs as a few graceful ribbons, but on scheduled release days, water from the lake thunders over the rocks in one of the most dramatic sights in the region. Silver Run Falls and Whitewater Falls, at 411 feet, are an easy drive south past Cashiers, and Panthertown Valley's Schoolhouse Falls is close by.

Panthertown Valley, often called the "Yosemite of the East," protects about 6,300 acres of the Nantahala National Forest, with nearly 30 miles of trails, granite domes like Big Green Mountain, and waterfalls tucked into the valley. A steep trail from the Pines Recreation Area leads down to High Falls, and the Whiteside Mountain trail, between Cashiers and Highlands, offers some of the best views on the Plateau.

Glenville is home to Trillium Links & Lake Club, with its Morris Hatalsky golf course along the shores of Lake Glenville, and Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club keeps its private Lake Club on the lake, with its top-ranked Tom Fazio course nearby. Wade Hampton Golf Club and High Hampton in Cashiers are just a short drive south.
About 20 minutes north in Cullowhee, Western Carolina University's Bardo Arts Center brings professional performances to its 1,000-seat hall and is home to the WCU Fine Art Museum, which is free to visit. To the south, The Village Green in Cashiers hosts concerts and festivals from spring through fall, including the summer series Groovin' on the Green.
Summer's biggest night on the lake is Fireworks Over the Lake, presented each July by the Friends of Lake Glenville, which begins with a gala boat parade at dusk before the fireworks light up the sky over the water. The holiday season kicks off the day after Thanksgiving with Christmas on the Green in Cashiers, including the Mistletoe Market and the lighting of a 65-foot spruce at the village crossroads.
