Lake Toxaway sits at about 3,000 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Transylvania County, along US 64 between Cashiers and Brevard. At its center is Lake Toxaway itself, a 640-acre lake with 14 miles of shoreline and the largest privately held lake in North Carolina. Life here revolves around the water, with boathouses and docks along the shore and mountain views in every direction.
The lake has one of the most storied pasts in the Southern mountains. In 1902, developer E.H. Jennings filled Lake Toxaway as the first man-made lake in the Appalachian Mountains, and the next year the five-story Toxaway Inn opened on its shore, with electricity, indoor plumbing, and a ballroom. Promoted as the "Switzerland of America," it drew guests like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, John D. Rockefeller, and the Vanderbilts.
That golden age ended in August 1916, when heavy flooding broke the earthen dam and more than 5 billion gallons of water rushed over the falls toward South Carolina. The inn never reopened. In 1960, the Lake Toxaway Company rebuilt the dam and restored the lake, and in 1963 it added a golf course, the start of today's Lake Toxaway Country Club.
Today, Lake Toxaway is a quiet, close-knit lake community surrounded by protected land, including Gorges State Park and the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests, with some of the most dramatic waterfalls in the Southeast. Life in Lake Toxaway follows the seasons and the water. Summer is the high point, when seasonal homeowners return, docks fill with boats, and the lake becomes the center of everyday life, from morning swims to evening cruises. Fall brings cooler air and color across the surrounding ridges, and winter is quiet, with long views through the bare trees and a slower, more local pace.
Community life is warm and close-knit. The Toxaway Community Center hosts Friday night entertainment, live music plays at Meadow Ridge from June through October, and Lake Toxaway Country Club holds an art show at its clubhouse each October. Nearby Brevard adds a full cultural calendar, including the Brevard Music Center, whose summer festival has presented more than 80 public concerts a season since 1945.
Everyday essentials are close by. Toxaway Market and the Lake Toxaway General Store cover the basics, Brevard's shops and services are about 15 miles east, and Transylvania Regional Hospital, part of Mission Health, serves the area from Brevard.
Dining in Lake Toxaway is relaxed and personal, with a handful of local favorites. The Restaurant at The Greystone Inn serves seasonal menus inspired by the surrounding mountains and lakes in a casual fine dining setting right on the water. Grand Olde Station sits on the site of the old train depot that once served the Toxaway Inn, pairing a seasonal Southern menu with a historic caboose, wooden boats, and outdoor music and movies. For breakfast and lunch, Panthertown Cafe serves homemade soups, burgers, and sandwiches, and other local spots include Villa Amato for Italian and pizza, Los Vaqueros, Sweetwater Perk & Creamery, and Moondance Wine Bar. Shopping here is small-town and practical. Historic Toxaway Market carries groceries, wine, and local products close to home, while the boutiques, galleries, and antique shops of Cashiers and the shops of downtown Brevard are a short drive in either direction.
For visiting family and friends, The Greystone Inn is the area's landmark place to stay. It occupies Miss Lucy's lakeside mansion, built in 1915, and offers luxury rooms, a spa, dining, and lake activities, including sunset cruises aboard the Miss Lucy, a mahogany wooden boat. Beyond the inn, most lakeside stays are private vacation rentals.

Lake Toxaway sits on the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, one of the best waterfall regions in the Southeast. Right below the US 64 bridge over the Toxaway River, Toxaway Falls tumbles about 301 feet in a series of long cascades, the same path the lake's water took when the original dam broke in 1916. Just to the south, Gorges State Park is home to 26 waterfalls, and its trails lead to Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls on the Horsepasture River. Whitewater Falls, at 411 feet, is a short drive west.

Gorges State Park covers 7,709 acres with 56 miles of hiking trails, plus trails for biking and horseback riding, camping, and some of North Carolina's rarest plants and wildlife, all in a temperate rain forest that receives more than 90 inches of rain a year. Panthertown Valley, often called the "Yosemite of the East," is a short drive west, and above the lake, the Southern Highlands Reserve is a 120-acre native plant arboretum open to visitors on select days.

Lake Toxaway Country Club has been at the heart of the community since its course opened in 1963, just after the lake was restored. Today the private club offers an 18-hole golf course, tennis, croquet, swimming, and a lodge-style clubhouse, and the private golf clubs of Cashiers are about 15 miles away.
Nearby Brevard is one of the region's cultural centers. The Brevard Music Center has hosted its summer festival since 1945, presenting more than 80 public concerts a season, and the Brevard Plein Air Festival each September fills downtown with artists painting outdoors. Closer to home, Lake Toxaway Country Club holds an art show each October.
Independence Day is one of the biggest days of the year on Lake Toxaway, when boats fill the water for a day of celebrating on the lake. In nearby Brevard, the season brings HalloweenFest in October, downtown holiday window displays, and Light Up the Night in early December, with holiday music, ice skating, and the annual tree lighting.
